“Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are great because of their passion.”
~ Martha Graham
Open Floor dance and movement practice is suitable for all ability levels.
What to expect:
Open Floor Dance classes combine free form movement and dance with guided inquiries led by the teacher, we make time for personal practice, as well as oportunities for open dance, all supported by varied, inspiring and provocative music.
Each class begins with a warmup where we take time to tend to the needs of our bodies: warming and stretching our muscles and breathing our way into motion.
Classes usually revolve around a particular theme. Often this is a movement skill that serves how we move on the dance floor as well as in life. Examples include: grounding, centering, releasing, activating, settling, moving towards and away... We also often focus on particular parts of the body as entry points into our dance.
The classes usually end with a gentle settling phase so we have time to rest and integrate.
Rest assured there are no moves to learn and nothing you can get wrong.
If you find yourself feeling awkward or self-conscious try:
feeling into how your body wants to respond to the music.
focusing on how your movements feel inside your body, rather than how they look as a ‘dance’.
If you are in need of new movement inspiration, simply look around the room and try-on a move that captures your curiosity.
Our dance community is warm, inclusive and supportive. We'd love you to join us.
